Overview
Autumn Crocus is a magical plant that blooms in the fall when most other flowers have past. Also known as Colchicum byzantinum, this fall bloomer is incredibly unique. It starts blooming in August, producing light pink, tulip shaped flowers on tall, thin stems which easily reach up to six inches in height with no leaves. This ensures that the flower stands out from its surroundings. It also produces a yellowish-green foliage that persists throughout the winter. Watering
Autumn Crocus (Colchicum byzantinum) needs light waterings, about once or twice a week. The soil should remain slightly moist for the best growth and flowering. Water in the morning to give the foliage time to dry before nightfall, and make sure to avoid getting water on the foliage. Watering too often or in the evening can cause plant rot. In the colder months, reduce the amount of water given as the plant's needs become less, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
Light
The autumn crocus, Colchicum byzantinum, prefers a sunny spot to grow in for the best blooms. This species enjoys 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day, preferably in the morning. The afternoon sun can be a bit too intense in warmth and direct brightness, so this plant may need some midday shade to provide relief from the hot sun. These plants also thrive in areas with moderate temperatures; when the temperatures become too hot or cold in either direction, they can suffer and fail to bloom or even droop or wilt.
