Watering

Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Bagatelle') should be watered about once a week, using about 1 gallon of water for every 4-5 square feet of plant. Make sure the soil around the plant is damp but not soggy. During hotter summer months, it may be necessary to water more frequently (about twice a week instead). During the winter, it can be watered every 2 weeks or so instead. While watering, be sure to avoid getting water on the foliage of the plant as this can lead to diseases and fungus.
