Watering
Montbretia requires regular watering about once per week during the warmer months, slightly less (around every 10 days) in cooler weather. The soil should be slightly damp between waterings. It is best to give them a deep watering to saturate the soil and allow it to dry out between waterings. This will prevent the roots from standing in wet soil which can cause root rot. It can also be beneficial to fertilize your plant once a month during the growing season.
Light
Irish Sunset montbretia (Crocosmia 'Cropom') prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth, it should receive sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. In full sun, the leaves may become tinged with purple and the flowers can be more showy, although some sun protection is necessary in hot, dry regions. Morning sun is the best for this plant species, as the intense afternoon sun can cause the small, lance-shaped leaves to scorch. This plant does have some shade tolerance but will flower best when given optimal sun.

Pruning
Montbretsia should be pruned in late winter or early spring. This will help to increase air flow and reduce the risk of disease. You should cut back any dead stems and foliage that has become overgrown. Prune Montbretsia back to about 8–10 inches above ground level. If the foliage is tall and floppy, it can be cut down to a more manageable and upright shape. Pruning in this manner will promote the development of more flowers with larger blooms.
