Montbretia should be watered regularly to keep the soil moist. During the summer months, soil should be watered every 5-7 days, and during the winter, every 10-14 days. Soil should always be kept moist but not soggy, as Montbretia can become prone to root rot if it is overwatered. When watering, water evenly around the plant and make sure the soil is getting plenty of water.

Montbretia (Crocosmia 'Gold Rush') thrives in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade as well. During the summer months, plants should receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day; however, in particularly hot climates, some afternoon shade is recommended to prevent the foliage from becoming scorched. In milder climates, Montbretia (Crocosmia 'Gold Rush') is best grown in full sun for best flowering. In the winter months, shorter amounts of sunlight is suitable, and 5-6 hours is plenty for plants in colder regions.

Pruning should involve cutting back the previous year's flower stems to the base and also removing any dead, damaged or otherwise unhealthy foliage from the plant. With montbretia, prune lightly and only take off the spent flower stems and small amounts of foliage. Over-pruning can reduce blooming and should be avoided.
