Watering
Montbretia should be watered approximately once a week, depending on the local climate and time of year. During summer months, Montbretia should be watered more frequently as the soil can dry out quickly in hot weather. In the winter, waterings can be reduced but should still be done regularly to prevent the plant from drying out. Montbretia should be watered at the base of the plant, avoiding wetting the leaves. Additionally, moisten the soil to a depth of about 4 inches. Be sure not to over-water the plant, as this can cause the roots to rot.
Light
Montbretia (Crocosmia pottsii) grows best in full sun. During the growing season of spring and summer in particular, it needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It is important to provide adequate sunlight to ensure that the plant will flower, as a lack of light can result in poor flowering and stunted growth. In addition, when the plant is dormant in the winter, it will still require some direct sunlight (at least 3-4 hours a day) during this time period too.

Pruning
Montbretia (Crocosmia pottsii) should be pruned in early spring, just before new growth begins. Be sure to wear gloves when pruning, as some varieties of montbretia still produce attractive foliage throughout the growing season but bear dangerously sharp-tipped leaves.
