Care Guide

💧

Watering

Coneflower (Echinacea 'Bravado') should be watered deeply and evenly once or twice a week throughout the growing season – generally from early spring until late autumn. When watering, try to thoroughly wet the soil around the root area, avoiding getting the foliage wet. Be sure to water so that the soil around the plant is moist but not soaking wet, as this can cause root rot and fungal issues. During periods of extremely hot weather, an extra watering might be necessary. After watering, it's good to check the soil a few inches below the surface; if it feels dry, give the plant another drink. Gardeners should wait until the top 2-3 inches of the soil dry out between waterings. In the winter months, when the plant is dormant, you may need to water much less often. This is usually just once a month or every few months depending on the amounts of rainfall in your area.

☀️

Light

Coneflower (Echinacea 'Bravado') does best when given plenty of sunlight throughout the growing season. This plant should receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sun each day. If possible, provide the plant with some shade during the hottest part of the day, especially during the heat of mid-summer. This will help the plant remain healthy and produce a plentiful supply of flowers. In general, the more sunlight the plant receives, the better it will flower.

Pruning

For optimal growth, you should prune your coneflower (Echinacea 'Bravado') after it has finished flowering. This should be done in mid to late summer, before the plant has time to go to seed. Begin by snipping off dead, wilted, or discolored flowers with pruning shears. These should be cut down to the nearest branch or bud. Once the flowering has ceased, cut all of the remaining stems back to around 4 inches (10 cm) above the soil line. If your plant is located in an area that is vulnerable to strong winds, you may choose to cut the stems back even more, leaving only 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of stem remaining. This will help prevent the plant from being damaged by the wind. Be careful not to remove too much of the stem, as this can weaken the plant.
