Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant'

Overview

Snow crocus (Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant') is a beautiful small flower that blooms early in the spring. Its petals boast a lovely mix of ruby red, violet, pink and white. Unlike many other flowers, snow crocus will brighten up a garden even when it is covered in snow and at temperatures as low as -15°C. It won't suffer from frost, making it the ideal choice for colder climates. You can plant it in sunny borders, rockeries or lawns, and it looks beautiful when naturalised in grass. Growing just 4-6" tall, snowy crocus is an amazing choice for any garden!

Care Guide

💧

Watering

Snow crocus (Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant') grows best in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. The soil should be kept on the dry side, and it's best to wait until the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry before watering. However, when the soil does need to be watered, it should be given a good soak, allowing the water to penetrate the soil deeply. During the growing season (summer and fall), Snow Crocus should be watered at least once a week, and more often in very hot, dry weather. During the winter months, when the plants are dormant, they should only need to be watered once a month or less.

Light

Snow crocus (Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant') thrives in locations that receive full sun or partial sun during the day and remain cool in the evenings. An ideal location for this plant species would receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day; however, it will also tolerate some shade. During the late spring and summer, snow crocus will benefit from direct morning sunlight and some shade in the late afternoon to protect the flowers from the intense afternoon heat. Additionally, this plant species can tolerate some winter sun, making it a good choice for regions with cold winter climates.

Pruning

Snow crocuses (Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant') should be pruned after flowering, as cutting the flower buds back before they've opened may reduce flowering for the next season. The best time to prune them is when the leaves have started to yellow, about 2 weeks after flowering. Pruning should involve removing the withered or faded flower heads just above the leaves. Don't worry if you accidentally remove the leaves in the pruning process; new ones will grow in due time. With that said, you should only prune back the flower stalks and not too much of the foliage as it helps the plant store energy for the next season.
